US-based Security Assistance Monitor and UK-based Corruption Watch will conduct a day long workshop on how to investigate the global arms trade. This interactive training will cover how investigative journalists can find or amplify their stories using the information, resources, and techniques provided. They will also share cases and stories that they have worked on in the past and work with journalists in attendance to develop story ideas and identify safe tools to verify information. The training will be conducted by Christina Arabia and Elias Yousif from Security Assistance Monitor as well as Paul Holden from Corruption Watch.

ستتطرق كلٌّ من منظمة Security Assistance Monitor المتمركزة في الولايات المتحدة ومنظمة Corruption Watch المتمركزة في المملكة المتحدة في ورشة عملٍ على مدار يومٍ كامل تتطرق إلى التحقيق في تجارة الأسلحة الدولية. ستغطي الورشة التفاعلية مختلف الطرق التي تمكّن الصحافيين الاستقصائيين من تقوية قصصهم باستخدام المعلومات والموارد والتقنيات التي سيتم توفيرها لهم. وخلال الورشة سيتم مشاركة القضايا والقصص التي تم العمل عليها سابقا وسيتم العمل مع الصحافيين الذين سيحضرون ورشة العمل لتطوير أفكار قصصهم وتحديد الأدوات الآمنة للتأكد من صحة المعلومات. سيقدم الورشة التدريبية كريستينا أريبيا وإلياس يوسف من Security Assistance Monitor بول هولدن من Corruption Watch. 

In this workshop, participants will develop a better understanding of Google tools and other third party tools. Through generating new stories and exploring the most popular topics of today, participants will cultivate interesting ideas and valuable skills. The session will enable participants to save both time and effort in their work through hands-on training, including fact checking and video verification tools.

في ورشة العمل هذه، یتعرف المشاركون إلى حزمة أدوات طوّرتها "جوجل" وجهاّت أخرى؛ لمساعدة الصحافيين في البحث عن أفكار جديدة لقصص مختلفة، واستكشاف الموضوعات الأكثر اهتماماً في المجتمعات. يحظى المشاركون أیضاً بفرصة تدريب على استخدام أدوات تساعدهم في التحقّق من صدقية المصادر، دقّة الأخبار خصوصا تقنيات فحص مقاطع الفیدیو؛ بهدف توفير الوقت والجهد داخل غرف الأخبار.

This session will discuss ways to set specific goals on social media, develop a plan to reach these goals, how to choose the appropriate platform for each content, increase the rate of accessing the followers, increase the rate of interaction in addition to some special ways to use social media in storytelling. 

في هذه الجلسة ستتعرف على كيفية تحديد أهداف معينة على وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي ورسم خطّة للوصول لتلك الأهداف، وكذلك كيفية اختيار المنصة المناسبة لكل محتوى. ستطلع أيضا على طرق رفع معدل ولوج المتابعين، زيادة نسبة التفاعل، إضافة إلى استخدام وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي في رواية القصص.

In this workshop, we will walk through each step in the data journalism pipeline, teaching you how to collect, clean, analyze, and visualize information for a data-driven story. We will begin the day with a dataset, and start by asking questions we would like to answer using the data. Throughout the day, we will walk through the process of checking the data, cleaning and organizing it, analyzing it, and finally visualizing it. We will brainstorm a series of final visualizations and "stories" that can be drawn from the data.

في هذه الجلسة، نتحدّث عن كل خطوة في مسار الصحافة القائمة على البيانات وكيفية جمع البيانات وتصويرها ثم تنقيتها وتحليلها على طريق بناء تقرير معزّز بالبيانات. نبدأ بمجموعة من البيانات ثم نطرح الأسئلة حول هذه البيانات، قبل فحصها، تنقيتها، تنظيمها وتحليلها ثم تصويرها بصريا. ثم نتبادل الأفكار للخروج بسلسلة من المرئيات النهائية و "القصص" التي يمكن استخلاصها من البيانات.

Journalists are often at risk of having their accounts compromised on social platforms, we will be walking through the best practices to secure accounts, how to correctly report content and our policies around operating under a pseudonym name to protect safety online.

We live in a world where smartphones are increasingly used by journalists and human rights defenders. Today, smartphones can be used to capture atrocities committed by violent and oppressive states and groups. However, issues such as the verifiability of the audio-visual material still pose challenges to the work of investigators and the courts. As a result, valuable opportunities to use footage of these crimes for justice are lost. As legal and technological experts, eyeWitness recognises that the technology needed to verify photos and videos should be placed in the hands of journalists and human rights defenders. eyeWitness aims to bridge the gap between efforts to document grave human rights violations and the requirements for justice mechanisms to use this information, by providing an innovative system that addresses existing challenges. This session will present the eyeWitness app and methodology, and how it can be used by first responders on the ground to document atrocity crimes and crime scenes for accountability purposes by verifying audio-visual material. Our partners have used our technology to document ongoing violations, including mass graves, air strikes and shelling, protests, injuries, crimes scenes, raids by security forces, environmental damage, and threats against activists and journalists.

Facebook Public Policy team will present a general overview of Facebook’s community standards, the process in which they are developed and examples of how these community standards reflect in the region. The session will also include a Q&A to help answer questions by the audience.
