Investigating Arms Trade Hosted by Security Assistance Monitor التحقيق في تجارة الأسلحة الدولية برعاية (Convention Center-Lotus Room)

US-based Security Assistance Monitor and UK-based Corruption Watch will conduct a day long workshop on how to investigate the global arms trade. This interactive training will cover how investigative journalists can find or amplify their stories using the information, resources, and techniques provided. They will also share cases and stories that they have worked on in the past and work with journalists in attendance to develop story ideas and identify safe tools to verify information. The training will be conducted by Christina Arabia and Elias Yousif from Security Assistance Monitor as well as Paul Holden from Corruption Watch.

ستتطرق كلٌّ من منظمة Security Assistance Monitor المتمركزة في الولايات المتحدة ومنظمة Corruption Watch المتمركزة في المملكة المتحدة في ورشة عملٍ على مدار يومٍ كامل تتطرق إلى التحقيق في تجارة الأسلحة الدولية. ستغطي الورشة التفاعلية مختلف الطرق التي تمكّن الصحافيين الاستقصائيين من تقوية قصصهم باستخدام المعلومات والموارد والتقنيات التي سيتم توفيرها لهم. وخلال الورشة سيتم مشاركة القضايا والقصص التي تم العمل عليها سابقا وسيتم العمل مع الصحافيين الذين سيحضرون ورشة العمل لتطوير أفكار قصصهم وتحديد الأدوات الآمنة للتأكد من صحة المعلومات. سيقدم الورشة التدريبية كريستينا أريبيا وإلياس يوسف من Security Assistance Monitor بول هولدن من Corruption Watch.

In this workshop, we will walk through each step in the data journalism pipeline, teaching you how to collect, clean, analyze, and visualize information for a data-driven story. We will begin the day with a dataset, and start by asking questions we would like to answer using the data. Throughout the day, we will walk through the process of checking the data, cleaning and organizing it, analyzing it, and finally visualizing it. We will brainstorm a series of final visualizations and "stories" that can be drawn from the data.

We live in a world where smartphones are increasingly used by journalists and human rights defenders. Today, smartphones can be used to capture atrocities committed by violent and oppressive states and groups. However, issues such as the verifiability of the audio-visual material still pose challenges to the work of investigators and the courts. As a result, valuable opportunities to use footage of these crimes for justice are lost. As legal and technological experts, eyeWitness recognises that the technology needed to verify photos and videos should be placed in the hands of journalists and human rights defenders. eyeWitness aims to bridge the gap between efforts to document grave human rights violations and the requirements for justice mechanisms to use this information, by providing an innovative system that addresses existing challenges. This session will present the eyeWitness app and methodology, and how it can be used by first responders on the ground to document atrocity crimes and crime scenes for accountability purposes by verifying audio-visual material. Our partners have used our technology to document ongoing violations, including mass graves, air strikes and shelling, protests, injuries, crimes scenes, raids by security forces, environmental damage, and threats against activists and journalists.

Media Narratives and Internet Trolling and Digital Protection in a changing Arab world: السرد الإعلامي، الهجمات الرقمية الممنهجة والذباب الإلكتروني.. آفاق الحماية الرقمية في عالم عربي متغيّر (Convention Center-Grand Ballroom)

Different narratives of the MENA region are depicted by the media of the Western and Arab worlds, especially in the areas of war and political unrest. These narratives are continuously contested by opposing powers - including rebels and governments - to ensure that the media is in favour of their ideologies. They aim to spin stories that are advantageous to their pursuit of ultimate triumph. Consequently, journalists exposing the truth and activists campaigning for solutions are being trolled on the internet by governments, state agencies, as well as other powerful players. The Social Media Exchange (SMEX), a Lebanese NGO, is working hard to defend human rights in digitally networked spaces in the MENA. Often, the internet is shut down by governments to cover up horrific human rights violations, especially dealing with political unrest. This also prevents demonstrators from using social media to expose what they are witnessing.
In this opening plenary, Rasha Qandeel, one of the Arab world's renowned TV interviewers and political talk show hosts, interviews three professionals to share their experiences and insights before engaging the audience.

تسرد وسائل الإعلام - في الإقليم وسائر العالم- روايات مختلفة عن منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا؛ وبخاصة لدى تغطية الحروب والاضطرابات السياسية. وتتعرض هذه السردية دوما للانتقاد والتشريح بين القوى المتصارعة - مجموعات معارضة، متمردون وحكومات - فيسعى كل طرف منهم لضمان وقوف الإعلام إلى جانبه. وبالتالي يغزل زوايا القصص بما يتناسب مع مصالحه ومنظوره للحقائق في مسعى لتحقيق النصر على خصومه. في المحصلة، يتعرض الصحافيون والنشطاء الذين يسعون لكشف الحقائق إلى غزوات رقمية ممنهجة يشنّها "ذباب إلكتروني" مجنّد لمصلحة حكومات، وكالات دول وعديد لاعبين أقوياء.

هناك عدد من المنظمات مثل (SMEX-The Social Media Exchange) تجهد للدفاع عن حقوق الإنسان عبر الشبكات الرقمية، خصوصا في العالم العربي. تنزع بعض الحكومات إلى حجب شبكة الانترنت في مسعاها للتعتيم على خروق مفزعة لحقوق الإنسان، خصوصا لدى مواجهتها لاضطرابات سياسية. هذه الممارسات تحرم محتجّين من استخدام مواقع التواصل لفضح الانتهاكات الحكومية بحقهم. تلك المناخات وغيرها من الظروف استدعت وجود منظمات إنسانية - مثل SMEX اللبنانية؛ لتعزيز دور الصحافيين وتكريس دورهم في الرقابة والتوعية وسط مجتمعات مكتظة بالمخالفات تخلو من مؤشرات العدالة الاجتماعية.

الصحفية رشا قنديل تتحاور في هذه الجلسة الافتتاحية العامة مقابلات مع ثلاثة خبراء في هذا المضمار لمشاركة خبراتهم وأفكارهم مع الجمهور.

Screening of ARIJ Investigation "Warmongers", by ARIJeans Sameh Laboudi, Aseel Sarieh and Saadeh Abdulqader, the investigation tells the story of how human traffickers in Egypt are exploiting vulnerable Yemeni and Syrian refugees and convincing them to sell their kidneys. Featuring interviews with key figures at each step of the process, the reporters show how the network of organ traders uses forged documents to circumvent Egyptian law. In this session, Marina Walker Guevara, The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) Director of strategic initiatives, discusses what she learned in her year-long long fellowship, where she worked with Stanford University’s machine learning scientists on how to enhance the investigative process using AI. In this session, she will tell us about the different ways in which AI can augment the work of investigative reporters, and it limitations.
As a journalist, you don’t need to be a tech expert to understand any of this, but if you want to be part of the present and future innovation, don’t miss out on this session.

This session will introduce a draft of a Hate Speech Glossary for Palestinian media. It has been produced by a number of Palestinian universities and journalists in collaboration with the Ethical Journalism Network (EJN). We invite Palestinian journalists and media stakeholders to join us in this session, in order to give feedback and comments on the glossary before we move to finalise the document.

The session will be chaired by Dr Zahera Harb, City University and EJN, and include presentations and comments from Dr Bassam Ewedeh, Birzeit University and Njood Qasem, Jerusalem Free University and journalist in Palestine.

Hosted by the Rory Peck Trust and the Frontline Freelance Register, the all day Freelance "Safety Surgeries" are free of charge and open to freelance investigative journalists, working across all platforms, who cover the MENA region.

The tailored private consultations will focus on physical safety issues, including risk assessment and assignment planning. The one-to-one safety sessions cover topics ranging from navigating checkpoints to packing appropriate kit for assignments. The trainers will help the freelance journalists improve their safety practices, and answer any questions that they might have.

Two Arabic and English-speaking Safety Experts will deliver the sessions. Individual consultations last up to 45 minutes.

On Twitter, millions of tweets are published daily. Some escalate into a public conversation, some might even become part of a TV report. Have you ever thought that these abbreviated texts - which are limited to a certain number of letters - could turn into interesting journalistic reports?

In this session, we will gain insight into the usage of the available data in each tweet. We will learn how to access and analyse the archives of the tweets of public figures by using specific hashtags, putting them in organized tables and using them for data-driven stories. We will learn how to present these stories using interactive visuals, which will be done by presenting a number of stories conducted by the InfoTimes team over the past two years. We will also examine the latest data analysis techniques in this session.

Introduction to the "Forensic Architecture Project" مقدمة إلى مشروع (Convention Center-Lotus Room)

Forensic Architecture is an interdisciplinary research group that undertakes spatial and media investigations into cases of state and corporate violence, human rights violations and environmental destruction. Working with and on behalf of communities affected by political violence, Forensic Architecture gathers publicly available media data from a distance and places it in critical conversation with the material we collect on the ground; what we call 'ground truths'. Presenting Herbicidal Warfare in Gaza and Killing in Umm al-Hiran, this talk points to the methods of our investigations, outlining the diagram of relations that make up their content and direction, which include the communities that experience violence, solidarity and human rights groups, and experts proximate and remote.

Forensic Architecture هي مجموعة أبحاث متعدّدة التخصّصات تختص في إجراء تحقيقات استقصائية إعلامية ومكانية حول حالات العنف في القطاعين العام والخاص، فضلا عن انتهاكات حقوق الإنسان وتلوث البيئة.
بالإنابة عن المجتمعات المتأثرة بالعنف السياسي، تجمع Forensic Architecture بيانات وسائل الإعلام المتاحة للجمهور عن بُعد، وتضعها ضمن محاكاة مهمّة مع مواد تجمعها على أرض الواقع. ونُطلق على ذلك "ground truths" أي "حقائق من أرض الواقع".

Meet Carole Cadwalladr, award-winning British freelance investigative journalist for the Guardian and Observer who exposed the Facebook-Cambridge Analytica data scandal. Cadwalladr uncovered how the UK-based political consulting firm used Facebook as a means for “political voter surveillance” through the collection of user data points taken in record data breach. The scandal exposed the dark side of social media and its influence in political elections worldwide, including the USA presidential vote in 2016 and the so-called Brexit referendum. Her articles triggered numerous investigations and were partly responsible for hauling Mark Zuckerberg in front of Congress, resulting in a Facebook being fined several billion dollars. She has won over a dozen awards and was named a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize in 2019 for her work. She made some powerful enemies and became the center of the news she reported on at a large personal cost; Cadwalladr has had to deal with the wrath of the forces she exposed, but her work has been a vital demonstration of the power of real journalism. Not only has she demanded transparency, she has also shown through her cutting-edge reporting what transparency looks like.
“This is about the integrity of our democracy. These [high-tech] platforms which were created to connect us, have now been weaponized. It is impossible now to know what is what because nothing is what it seems,” Cadwalladr stated. Power lies with those who have the information and data about you. High-tech Platforms such as Facebook, Google and Youtube, are more powerful that any nation state, she explains in a recent TEDtalk, “This should be troubling to us all, and we are all individual data. In this interactive on and offline session aimed at journalists and media professionals in conflict areas, we want to show and develop strategies for taking care of one’s mental health and ways of preventing trauma

As part of the online-training project “Media Heroes“, this session will connect a regional community of Arabic-speaking journalists and media makers from conflict areas (especially Libya, Yemen and Syria) and the audience at the ARIJ forum for an interactive online and offline session on self-care and trauma prevention. As it will be broadcasted live, this session combines input and (virtual) discussion in order to enable journalists who do not have access to events such as the ARIJ forum to participate and to foster regional exchange and community building. Our experienced speaker and moderator will give short inputs, practical advice, strategies and resources on how journalists can protect themselves individually and as a community from traumatization and mental instabilities, as well as ways to strengthen their resilience in difficult and volatile environments. The inputs will be combined with interactive elements, questions and input from both our online audience and the local participants to foster exchange and to benefit from the various backgrounds, experiences and expertise.

تستهدف هذه الجلسة التفاعلية عبر الإنترنت الصحافيين/ الصحفيات في مناطق النّزاع بهدف إظهار وتطوير الاستراتيجيات المناسبة للعناية بصحة الأفراد النفسية ووقايتهم من الصدمات النفسية.
تربط هذه الجلسة بين صحافيين/ صحفيات المتحدثين/ المتحدثات باللغة العربية في مناطق نزاع متفجرّة؛ بالتحديد في ليبيا، اليمن وسوريا من جهة، وجمهور ملتقى (أريج) من جهة أخرى. ويطلّع المشاركون على فضلى آليات الحماية في جلسة مباشرة وتفاعلية عبر الإنترنت حول موضوع العناية الذاتية والوقاية من الصدمات النفسية.
تعتمد الجلسة أنموذج اﻟﻤﺤﺎﺿﺮات اﻟﺴﺮﻳﻌﺔ واﻟﺤﻮار (عبر الإنترنت) من أجل منح الصحافيين/ الصحفيات وصانعي/ صانعات الإعلام الذين/ اللواتي لا يستطيعون/ يستطعن حضور مناسبات كملتقى (أريج) مثلاً، فرصة تبادل التجارب بين مختلف دول المنطقة.

In this session, Dr. Yasmine Dabbous discusses challenges and prospects of introducing this specialized genre to academia. Yasmine is the chair of the board of ARIJ and is one of the first to teach ARIJ’s latest curriculum package at a university in Lebanon; a three-credit-hour investigative journalism course. Yasmine is joined by expert Arab colleagues who have worked hard over the last few years to introduce the basics of investigative reporting to undergraduate and graduate students.

The ethical principles of transparency, accuracy, fairness, humanity and impartiality should apply to all forms of journalism, yet becomes increasingly challenging in a digital and globalized world. Data journalism requires more self-scrutiny, because the journey towards story-telling is more complex. It’s success requires a process that relies on presenting information and data accurately, clearly and fairly, at all stages. At each stage, the data journalist must keep the standard ethical questions at the forefront: Is this accurate? Am I respecting individual privacy? Have I produced a fair and unbiased representation of the data and is it fair to data source? Does my audience understand what I have done?

This session will look at the following stages of data journalism, focusing on the particular ethical challenges that might come with producing a piece of work derived and based on data. It will provide data journalists with the tools to begin to critically reflect on their practice, particularly when thinking about data sources, collection, analysis and visualization of the data. It will treat data journalism, not as a static field in its own right, but as journalism that comes with its own set of ethical considerations and challenges.

في هذه الجلسة، يتعرّف المشاركون على وجوب تطبيق المبادئ الأخلاقية المتمثلة في الشفافية، الدقّة، الإنصاف، الإنسانية والحياد على جميع أشكال الصحافة. ومع ذلك، فإنها تزداد صعوبة في عالم رقمي ومعولم.

This session will introduce a number of research and verification techniques to our participants, with an emphasis on hands-on practice and presentation of various case studies.

The first part of the session will focus on introducing the Syrian Archive workflow, key methodologies and concepts in digital research with hands-on exercises and case studies.

For example, when discussing geolocation of photographs and videos, trainers will describe how to carry out this methodology from a beginner’s level up to difficult exercises, along with providing a range of examples of this technique being used in various investigations across different international contexts.

The second part of the session will introduce different open source tools that will help journalists, researchers and human rights defenders conduct investigations and digital verification cases related to human rights violations.

In this session, Transparency International’s Special Legal Council’s expert Alexander Papachristou and veteran Jordanian and Syrian media law experts Mohammad Qtishat and Rahada Abdoush will advise on how to deal with local, regional and international media laws that could be used against you by those angered by your work. They will share insight into how to make sure your investigative report is legally sound before you publish or broadcast, especially if you are being threatened by national security or privacy laws.

Our panellists will discuss the status of women in newsrooms and news output environments, what their position in the industry means for the voices we hear as journalists and the subjects of our journalism, and how the underrepresentation impacts the vulnerability of our female colleagues. We will discuss the threats women face online and offline, the work of Women in News in the region and examine their new sexual harassment policies. We will also consider the relationship between gendered practices and a lack of ethics and what that means for the broader industry – not just women - and hear about a new gender analysis of the media landscape in Iraq. Our discussion will invite audience participation and is one to which both our female and male colleagues are very welcome to attend.

Forbidden Stories: keeping stories alive القصص المحرّمة.. إبقاء القصص حيّة (Convention Center-Orchid Room)

Meet Sandrine Rigaud, Editor-in-Chief

Forbidden Stories is an international network of investigative journalists, whose mission is to continue and publish the work of other journalists facing threats, prison or murder. It is a non-profit project founded in 2017 by Laurent Richard, a French award-winning investigative journalist and Knight-Wallace fellow. The goal of the project is to ensure that the maximum number of people have access to uncensored news on crucial topics, such as the environment, health, human rights or corruption.

By continuing the work of reporters who can no longer investigate, we can send a powerful signal to enemies of the press: even if you succeed in stopping a single messenger, you will not stop the message.

Since its inception, Forbidden Stories has already spearheaded several high level transnational projects dedicated to investigate the death of reporters and to keep their stories alive. The session will focus on the way the project relies on collaborative journalism in order to “keep stories alive”.

Since 2017, with dozens of partners around the world ( including Le Monde, The Guardian, The New York Times, El Pais,...) Forbidden Stories has published the Daphne Project (to complete the investigation that led to the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia), the Green Blood project (designed to finish work begun by journalists who have been killed or threatened working on environment-related stories) and took part more recently in the Miroslava Project (from the name of a well-known Mexican journalist killed for exercising her profession).

In March 2018, Forbidden Stories received the “Journalism Project of the Year Grand Prize” at the French annual Journalism Summit. In May 2019, the project won the European Press Prize special award that celebrates the highest achievements in European journalism.

تعرّفوا على ساندرين ريجود، رئيس تحرير شبكة "القصص المحرمة" Forbidden Stories؛ وهي تجمع دولي من الصحافيين الاستقصائيين، مهمّتهم متابعة ونشر عمل الصحافيين الآخرين ممن يواجهون تهديدات؛ مثل السجن أو القتل.
يهدف هذا المشروع -الذي أسسّه عام 2017 الصحافي الاستقصائي الفرنسي الحائز على عدة جوائز، لوران ريتشارد- إلى ضمان اطلاع أكبر عدد ممكن من الناس على الأخبار غير الخاضعة للرقابة، ذات الصلة بقضايا مهمّة؛ البيئة، الصحة، حقوق الإنسان أو الفساد.
يمكننا اليوم توجيه رسالة قوية لأعداء الصحافة من خلال إسناد عمل المراسلين الذين لم يعد بإمكانهم إجراء استقصاءات: "حتى لو نجحت في أن توقف رسالة واحدة، فإنك لن تتمكّن من إيقاف الرسالة نفسها".

تركّز الجلسة على كيفية اعتماد هذا المشروع على صحافة تعاونية للحفاظ لإبقاء القصص الخطيرة حية. منذ نشأتها، نجحت Forbidden Stories في ريادة العديد من المشاريع عالية المستوى، كرّست للتحقيق في وفاة مراسلين صحافيين وإبقاء قصصهم حية.

The collapse in the advertising model that powered news output for generations has been well documented. Answers to the question of how quality journalism is paid for are few and far between, but new players have arrived with sustainable - allbeit usually much smaller - models for the production of content. Independent Arab media platforms are experimenting with new ways to finance quality journalism. But what do these models mean for the actual content? Are these new business models sustainable? Are these models forcing new media journalists to work in an exciting way that throw off some of the constraints of previous eras against this backdrop.

تستعرض هذه الجلسة نماذج مبتكرة لمضمون صحافة جديدة. تشهد صناعة الإعلام اليوم انهيار النموذج الإعلاني الذي كان يحرّك نشر الأخبار لعدّة أجيال، في وقت نواجه تحديات كبيرة لتوفير التمويل لمؤسسات إعلامية محايدة لا تخضع للسيطرة. وسط هذه المعادلة، نجحت جهّات فاعلة جديدة - وإن كانت أصغر حجما - في طرح نماذج مستدامة لإنتاج محتوى مختلف بعيدا عن تأثيرات الإعلان وسطوة القوى المؤثرة.

تتعرّف خلال هذه الجلسة على تجربة منصّات إعلامية مستقلة طرقاً جديدة في تمويل صحافة مستقلة. ولكن ما الذي تعنيه هذه النماذج بالنسبة للمحتوى الفعلي؟ وهل هذه النماذج التجارية الجديدة مستدامة؟ وهل تدفع هذه النماذج الإعلاميين الجدد إلى العمل بطريقة مثيرة للاهتمام بها؟ وهل نجحت في التخلّص من بعض قيود العصور السابقة؟..

Practical steps towards better mental health support for local journalists in the MENA- Hosted by MCJN and IMS (Convention Center-Orchid Room) نحو رعاية نفسية أفضل للصحفيين: خطوات عملية لدعم الصحفيين المحليين برعاية شبكة ماري كولفن للصحفيات

The panelists will discuss the importance and challenges related to providing mental health support to local journalists in the MENA region. Drawing on their own professional, institutional and personal experiences of this issue, the panelists will talk about practical measures already in place, such as direct online counselling, field workshops, and blogs on preventative measures for better mental health. The economic, cultural, logistical and psychological barriers that can prevent journalists from seeking and accessing appropriate mental health support will be discussed. The role of local media outlets in mental health support and exercising proper duty of care towards staff, regardless of resources to offer treatment. The discussion will emphasise that the need for mental health support is not solely limited to conflict areas, and that journalists working in stable countries, are also very likely to suffer from trauma, anxiety.... as a result of their work and should seek help.
المتحدثون في هذه الجلسة يناقشون التحديات والعوائق أمام توفير الدعم في مجال الصحة النفسية للصحافيين في منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال أفريقيا. كما يستعرضون التدابير التطبيقية والعملية بالاستناد إلى تجاربهم المهنية، المؤسسية والشخصية؛ منها: الاستشارات المباشرة عبر الإنترنت، ورش العمل الميدانية والمدّونات ذات الصلة بالتدابير الوقائية لدعم الصحة النفسية.

كما يتطرق المتحدثون إلى الحواجز الاقتصادية، الثقافية، اللوجستية والنفسية التي تعوق إبحار الصحافيين عبر الشبكة العنكبوتية وإمكانية حصولهم على دعم مناسب في مجال الصحّة النفسية. ويستعرضون أيضا دور وسائل الإعلام المحلية في تأمين عناصر الصحّة النفسية وتوفير الرعاية الصحية المناسبة لموظفيها والعاملين فيها، بغض النظر عن الموارد اللازمة. وثمّة حاجة ملّحة الآن لتوفير صحة نفسية ليس في مناطق الصراعات فحسب، بل في مناطق وبلدان مستقرة.

Building Resilience to Online Violence Hosted by IWMF التصدّي المستدام للعنف عبر الإنترنت (Convention Center-Lotus Room)

The International Women’s Media Foundation will offer an in-depth panel assessing the risks women journalists face online and will hold a discussion on how to support a culture of resilience and diversity in the news media. Online attacks against journalists - especially women - has become a growth industry that is adversely impacting journalists and their stories. While a number of organisations are working to address this problem, none are focusing on providing services to the community the IWMF is best positioned to serve: women journalists around the world who are targeted online and attacked for doing their jobs because of who they are. The panel will touch on the development of security assessments and protocols to combat and respond to online attacks and offer technical support practices for participants. The IWMF is committed to researching the issue of harassment in the industry, to develop and encourage solutions that not only provide support and resources to women journalists, but also seek to address the underlying structures.

تقدّم المؤسسة الدولية لإعلام للمرأة (IWMF) جلسةً معمّقة لتقييم المخاطر التي تواجهها الصحافيات عبر الإنترنت ومناقشة كيفية توفير الدعم لنشر ثقافة تصدٍّ وتنوّع في الإعلام الإخباري. فالهجمات على الصحافيين عبر الإنترنت، وبالأخص السيدات أصبحت أمراً متنامياً يؤثر وبشدّة في الصحافيات وقصصهن. رغم أنّ هناك منظمات تعمل على حل المشكلة، إلاّ أنها جميعا لا تركّز على توفير الخدمات للمجتمع الذي تخدمه (IWMF) ، وهو مجتمع الصحافيات في العالم، وهن السيدات المستهدفات عبر الإنترنت واللواتي يتعرضن للهجوم عند القيام بعملهن لسبب كونهن سيدات. كما ستتطرق الجلسة إلى مسألة تطوير أساليب قياس أمنية وبروتوكولات تهدف للتصدّي لهذه الهجمات عبر الإنترنت والرد عليها وتوفير أساليب الدعم التقني للمشاركات. IWMF ملتزمة بالبحث في مسألة التحرّش في هذا المجال وتطوير الحلول، وتلك الحلول التي لا تكتفي بتوفر الدعم والموارد اللازمة للصحافيات فحسب، بل وتسعى أيضاً للتطرق إلى البنى الأساسية للمشكلة.

We live in a world where smartphones are increasingly used by journalists and human rights defenders. Today, smartphones can be used to capture atrocities committed by violent and oppressive states and groups. However, issues such as the verifiability of the audio-visual material still pose challenges to the work of investigators and the courts. As a result, valuable opportunities to use footage of these crimes for justice are lost. As legal and technological experts, eyeWitness recognises that the technology needed to verify photos and videos should be placed in the hands of journalists and human rights defenders. eyeWitness aims to bridge the gap between efforts to document grave human rights violations and the requirements for justice mechanisms to use this information, by providing an innovative system that addresses existing challenges. This session will present the eyeWitness app and methodology, and how it can be used by first responders on the ground to document atrocity crimes and crime scenes for accountability purposes by verifying audio-visual material. Our partners have used our technology to document ongoing violations, including mass graves, airstrikes and shelling, protests, injuries, crimes scenes, raids by security forces, environmental damage, and threats against activists and journalists.
