We live in a world where smartphones are increasingly used by journalists and human rights defenders. Today, smartphones can be used to capture atrocities committed by violent and oppressive states and groups. However, issues such as the verifiability of the audio-visual material still pose challenges to the work of investigators and the courts. As a result, valuable opportunities to use footage of these crimes for justice are lost. As legal and technological experts, eyeWitness recognises that the technology needed to verify photos and videos should be placed in the hands of journalists and human rights defenders. eyeWitness aims to bridge the gap between efforts to document grave human rights violations and the requirements for justice mechanisms to use this information, by providing an innovative system that addresses existing challenges. This session will present the eyeWitness app and methodology, and how it can be used by first responders on the ground to document atrocity crimes and crime scenes for accountability purposes by verifying audio-visual material. Our partners have used our technology to document ongoing violations, including mass graves, air strikes and shelling, protests, injuries, crimes scenes, raids by security forces, environmental damage, and threats against activists and journalists.

يسعى موقع eyeWitness إلى تقديم الأفراد الذين يرتكبون فظائع إلى العدالة، من خلال تزويد المدافعين عن حقوق الإنسان، الصحافيين والمواطنين بتطبيق محمول لالتقاط مقاطع فيديو وصور للوقائع حقيقية، مع إمكانية التحقق منها.
يوفر تطبيق eyeWitness كاميرا سهلة الاستخدام، كما يلتقط البيانات الوصفية اللازمة لضمان استخدام الصور في التحقيقات الاستقصائية أو في خدمة المحاكم، إلى جانب تخزين المعلومات في مستوعبات eyeWitness، بعيدا عن احتمالات تعرضها للاختراق. ويطلّع المشاركون على كيفية استخدام تطبيق eyeWitness ومنهجه لتوثيق فظائع ومسارح الجرائم وصولا إلى خدمة مبدأ المساءلة بالاستناد إلى مواد سمعية وبصرية تعكس حقائق دامغة على الأرض. يضمن هذا الموقع استخدام اللقطات التصويرية لتعزيز المساءلة بالشراكة مع المُوثقين والمنظمات القانونية.
